INFORMATION & SETTING
Rappaport's law strictly forbids any fraternization with non magical folk. Witches and Wizards have long been forbidden from any intermingling; no friendship, certainly no romance. Support for a repeal grows, though, and many fear North America's magical line dying out without fresh bloodlines. Mysterious disappearances tied to witch hunters have occurred throughout the magical community, however. So, which fear will win out? The fear of being wiped out or the fear of fading away?

Mark Ellis

September 2, 1964

The library was the last place anyone would expect Mark Ellis to be. Anyone who actually knew him or at least knew about him were well aware of that. This was why the students sitting around the tables in the Ilvermorny library sent surprised looks towards one another when he strode into the area, a confident grin splattered across his face. He made a show of looking around, winking at some of the prettier faces he spotted before walking off into deeper library territory.

His reasons for showing up at the place were far from the usual. He wasn't here to study. He didn't do casual reading unless it was about sports. He was only there to find someone, a particular close friend of his that he hadn't seen in awhile and missed quite a lot. They'd been back two days already and he was quite disappointed he hadn't run into her yet.

"Hey Mel, where are ya?" he said, uncaring of the fact that he was in a library. Quite a few of the library's occupants shot him dirty glances while a handful started giggling at his antics. He chose to focus on the latter group. It was always a good feeling to make someone laugh. He continued looking for Melora Vautier, making sure to check in between the shelves lest she be sitting down along one of the aisles reading a book on the ground. He'd caught his big brother doing that at their home library once. It was weird.

Mark was doing the rounds, catching up with everyone. He was yet to meet the other members of his inner circle, and he was determined to find each of them today. The first one on the list was Melora, as she was the one he got along with the most. Knowing Mel, Mark assumed that the library was the best place to find his blonde friend, as she seemed to actually like studying.

"Mel?" he intoned once again, turning another corner just in time to see a familiar face. There she was. He immediately walked briskly towards her, grinning from ear to ear while speaking in his same normal tone of voice, which wasn't particularly suited for the setting they were in.

"Hey, I've been looking everywhere for you!" - a lie, the library was the first place he'd tried but he liked to embellish - "What're you doing here? It's only the first week back, you can't have been given homework yet!?" Most of the students were now giving him downright annoyed looks that flew right under Mark's radar. His only concern right now was catching up with his friend.

Melora Vautier

The familiar scent of old books always was a comfort, familiar and it spoke to something deep within that resonated the feeling of 'all was well'. This played no small part in the desire to want to be surrounded by the essence of it. It was a thought that always came to mind when in the library of Ilvermorny, that and the enjoyment of relative silence. There were soft murmurs of those studying together, the volume of their voices never raising more than a few decibels lest the disruption garner the attention of the librarian and consequences be the natural result. Melora never seemed to mind, knew that this place could bring peace and, usually, isolation.

While the volume was set quite low, it still took little focus to notice when it died entirely. Generally, this meant the librarian had come 'round to offer a stern hiss. A call interrupted the hush, her name in the middle of it then intoned again. Curious, she glanced up only to see the approach of a rather familiar face. This was just in time to hear the sudden quiet disrupted by his voice yet again. Inwardly, Melora winced but raised a hand in the hope that it would make his loud calls cease, thus allowing the loud calls to quickly abate. The last thing she wanted was to be the reason for a serious warning. Or worse.

"Hi, Mark." She offered a smile though her voice was louder than she would have liked, though decidedly quieter than his has been. Perhaps he'd pick up on the hint but there certainly was no guarantee. Melora moved a few books back into a neat pile, allowing him room for his own if he had any. Mark didn't appear to but it was also a clear invitation that he was welcome to join. So long as he lowered his voice soon, she thought.

"There's no harm in getting a head start on things." This time, her voice was consciously quiet, barely more than a whisper. Certainly, he would realize he was being too loud now? If not, she'd have to consider relinquishing her spot at the table and leaving altogether. Better that than detention, especially first week back. Banking on having to leave, Melora continued to put things back in order, rolled up a parchment she had been taking notes on from one of that term's textbooks. She knew better than to assume that Mark would want to study over a chat, after all.

Asking Mark to be quiet was like asking an albatross to crawl. He could do it, but it would be so unnatural that it would just feel wrong to him. There were a handful of people though who could get him to quiet down, if only for a limited amount of time. One of those people was Mel. Considering that Mark was as dense as a bag of rocks though, Mel's more subtle approach to telling him to lower his voice went right over the top of his head and he continued to talk in his normal tone of voice which, in terms of where they were, may as well have been him screaming from the top of his lungs. It was only a matter of time before the librarian showed up and kicked him and possibly Mel out of the library for causing a ruckus which meant it was probably a good idea for Mel to start fixing her stuff as Mark blabbed on, blissfully unaware of how much he was inconveniencing her.

"Yeah but wouldn't you much rather have fun?" he retorted with a grin as he picked up a random book and started shuffling through it. He didn't really pay attention to what was written. He didn't even know what the book was about honestly. He mainly glanced at the pictures as he waited for a response from his friend. He was like a child that way (among others). More interested in pictures than words in a textbook.

"Hey, why're you fixing your stuff? You done studying?" he asked abruptly as he finally noticed what Mel was doing. A soft hiss of 'Would you please pipe down, we're in the library!' came from one of the tables nearby and caused Mark to spin around and cause books to clatter down onto the floor.

"Sorry!" he said, forgetting to lower his voice once again as the girl that had initially told him to quiet down hissed at him and stood up with a huff, taking her books with her as she moved to a further table.

"Sheesh, people here are so uptight, I can't imagine how you take it Mel.." Mark continued, trailing off as he turned towards Mel and finally realized why she began gathering her things the moment he showed up. Mark really wasn't one to feel guilt or regret over many things, but when it came to his friends he was just like any other person in that department.

"Was I being too loud?" he said, his voice now noticeably softer, uncharacteristically so, "Sorry, wasn't really thinking. You don't have to leave because of me, we can hang out here. I promise I won't be too noisy."

He was fairly certain he would break that promise at some point if they stayed, but he was focusing more on not forcing Mel to leave just because he'd come around to screw things up. Despite his general thoughts about the place, he knew that she liked it in the library and wasn't about to ruin her day for himself.
